Earthquake in Japan, Tsunami in Pacific
Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences rest with people of Japan today – those affected by the earthquake and tsunami, the loved ones of those lost in this natural disaster, the communities now confronting the aftermath of this tragedy. The images of destruction and devastation touch the hearts of families around the world, and Members of Congress and all Americans stand ready to offer our aid and support to Japan in its hour of need.

If you have concerns about friends or relatives visiting or living in Japan, you can email the Department of State at JapanEmergencyUSC@state.gov. While email is strongly preferred, you can call the Department's emergency assistance center at 1-888-407-4747. You can also find more information available on my website.

Creating Jobs at the Port of San Francisco
Last weekend, I joined Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisor Malia Cohen, maritime workers, local port officials, and other community leaders to discuss job creation at Pier 70 of the Port of San Francisco. We toured the largest drydock on the West Coast of the Americas and witnessed the successful results of our investments in infrastructure in our City.

Congresswoman Pelosi discusses job creation at the Port of San Francisco with Supervisor Malia Cohen, Mayor Ed Lee,
SF Port Director Monique Moyer, and Hugh Vanderspek with BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair.

The public-private partnership at the Port of San Francisco serves as an economic hub of activity and a model of success for the nation. With federal support through the Army Corps of Engineers and private investments from the business community, the port serves both military and private vessels and acts as a gateway to domestic and international trade, connecting San Francisco to the rest of the world.

When we strengthen our ports, we strengthen our nation. For every $1 billion in exports shipped though seaports, 15,000 U.S. jobs are created. In spite of this, the Republican’s “So Be It” spending bill includes harmful cuts to our job-generating port industry, including cuts to port security needed to keep our country secure.

Poll after poll shows that the American people simply do not support the Republican’s proposal, which destroys 700,000 jobs and threatens our economic recovery. Fortunately, the Senate rejected their bill this week. The time is now for us to find common ground in creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and responsibly reducing the deficit.

Fighting for Marriage Equality
President Obama took a bold step forward for civil rights when he announced that the federal government would no longer argue to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act in court. DOMA is discriminatory; it is unfair and indefensible; and it betrays our nation’s long-held – and long-cherished – value of equality for all.

I oppose Speaker Boehner’s effort to put the House of Representatives in the position of defending this indefensible statute. Pursuing this legal challenge distracts from our core challenges: creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and responsibly reducing the deficit. That is why I voted against this action this week. The fight for marriage equality is far from over, and we will continue to work towards the day when all American families are treated with respect and viewed equally in the eyes of the law.

Casework Corner
One of my great privileges as a Member of Congress is to assist my constituents in resolving problems they may encounter with federal agencies. You can learn more about this assistance on my website.

My district staff will regularly hold office hours at libraries, community centers, senior-serving institutions, and other community organizations in neighborhoods throughout the 8th Congressional District in order to bring these services closer to the community.

Below is a schedule of my staff’s community office hours during March of 2011. This month’s services will focus on helping my constituents enroll in Medicare and resolve problems in obtaining their federal benefits, and will be conducted with the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) – a volunteer-based program administered by the California Department of Aging. HICAP’s volunteers are extensively trained to help California residents navigate the Medicare program.

If you have any questions about these services, you may call my district office at 415-556-4862.
