Pursuing an All-of-the-Above Energy Policy

I am proud to congratulate the Colorado School of Mines in Golden for being awarded a $225,000 grant for research on detection and extraction of methane hydrates. Methane hydrates are ice structures containing natural gas and are found in submerged sediments along nearly every continental shelf in the U.S. and worldwide. The School of Mines is a world class research institution specializing in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization. These specialties along with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory reflect how uniquely equipped Colorado is to be a national leader for a new energy future.

We have to invest in a diverse "all of the above" energy portfolio so we can continue to expand domestic production of oil and gas, reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and make America energy independent. I will continue working with my colleagues to secure our energy independence with an "all of the above" energy policy. This includes construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, the extension of the wind energy production tax credit, and a strategy to make it in America.

Developing Next Generation Weather Satellites in Colorado

With severe weather patterns in Colorado and nationwide increasing in number and cost, our nation must make intelligent investments in our weather prediction capabilities. Right here in Colorado we are building the most advanced weather satellites ever. Our nation can better prepare for future natural disasters by fulfilling our commitment to develop and complete the next generation weather satellite system called the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates JPSS will provide 3000% more data than current satellite systems. This actionable information will allow us to more accurately determine when and where severe weather will occur to mitigate the loss of life and property, as well as protect our farms, energy producers and transportation systems.

With over 600 people in Colorado working on this essential project, the construction of these satellites provides good-paying and stable private sector jobs. This type of innovation and construction helps us build our infrastructure for long-term prosperity. I am a strong advocate for JPSS and I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure completion of JPSS and the launch of the first satellite takes place as scheduled in 2017.
Celebrating District 7's Paralympians

The 2012 Paralympic Games in London are a celebration of these individuals overcoming disabilities and their fortitude to become world-class athletes. I am proud we have this opportunity to showcase the strength and unity of these athletes and our country.

I want to congratulate two of District 7's determined Paralympians: Alana Nichols from Wheat Ridge who is competing in Wheelchair Basketball, and Christina Schwab from Arvada who is competing in Track & Field. I am also proud to point out that 20 of the 200 disabled American athletes competing in the 2012 London Paralympic Games are veterans of the U.S. Armed Services. The hard work, dedication, and perseverance of these athletes is inspiring.

Overcoming adversity and disability emboldens all of us, and I encourage all Americans to advocate for and support the disabled in our communities. To find more information about the 2012 Paralympic Games or find out how Team USA is doing, visit www.london2012.com/paralympics/.

Constituent Success Story: Judy from Lakewood

Due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), new health insurance plans must provide preventive care with no co-pay or cost sharing. This will benefit approximately 54 million people nationwide.

Judy is one of those beneficiaries. After a regularly-scheduled procedure, Judy was thrilled the procedure didn't cost her a dime out-of-pocket. I am glad to see we are making healthcare more accessible and affordable because these new preventive measures can help defend against chronic diseases, which are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year.

"I returned from undergoing my 8th check-up since overcoming colon cancer 10 years ago. I left the check-in smiling because the usual $100 co-pay didn't apply -- it was covered under the Affordable Care Act. Thank you Congressman Perlmutter and President Obama!"
