Dear Friends,

This Monday, November 11, marks Veterans Day, commemorating both the anniversary of the end of World War I and the courageous men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe every day.

Our veterans have earned the thanks of a grateful nation for their service, and I will continue to fight to ensure our servicemembers receive the benefits they deserve. Having grown up in a military family, I am committed to our veterans and was proud to support several bills last month designed to improve veterans’ benefits. The bills include establishing a commission to evaluate the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) backlog in processing disability claims and recommending improvements; creating a new Veterans Economic Opportunity Administration to oversee the VA’s vocational rehabilitation, educational assistance, housing loan and small business programs; ensuring veterans receive an appeals form with any denial of benefits; and establishing an advisory committee to improve veteran education and job training.

As always, if you or a family member need assistance with veterans benefits or any other issue, please contact my office.

This Veterans Day, I plan to attend events in Capitol Heights and Landover. You can join me at the Capitol Heights Veterans Day Ceremony from 11am-2pm at the Town Hall Community Room, 1 Capitol Heights Blvd. Capitol Heights, MD. The Landover Hills Veterans Memorial Dedication Ceremony will be from 11am-12pm at Henry Rinck Park Annapolis Rd., between 71st and 72nd Ave. Landover Hills, MD. The Department of Veterans Affairs has also created this resource to help you find a 2013 Veterans Day ceremony near you.

There are also a variety of ways to support veterans on Veterans Day or at any time of the year. These include:
  • Volunteer to help a veteran. Put your unique talents to work by volunteering through the Veterans Administration (VA). The VA Voluntary Service Office can provide you information on how to help local veterans in our area.

  • Give to soldiers currently serving. Organize friends and family to send care packages and letters to Americans serving here and abroad.

  • Display the American flag. Show your national pride and display our nation’s flag in front of your home. To find proper ways to display the flag, click here. To order an American flag that has flown over the United States Capitol, please contact my office.

  • Help a vet find a job. First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative, Joining Forces, connects our servicemen and women, veterans, and military spouses with the resources they need to find jobs at home.
I want to personally extend my deepest thanks to all those who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces. Your service in protecting this country and our freedom is a debt we as a nation must strive continually to repay.

Sincerely,

Donna
