Speaker at the “Let Freedom Ring” Ceremony to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 28, 2013, I had the honor of speaking at the “Let Freedom Ring” Ceremony commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington. It was a tremendous and moving experience to speak on the same steps where Dr. King gave his historical “I Have A Dream” speech.

FY2014 Community-based Marine Debris Removal

Description: A principal objective of the NOAA Marine Debris Program is to provide federal financial and technical assistance to grass-roots, community-based activities that improve living marine resource habitats through the removal of marine debris and promote stewardship and a conservation ethic for NOAA trust resources. NOAA trust resources include living marine resources and their habitats, including commercial and recreational fishery resources (marine fish and shellfish); coastal habitats; diadromous fish species; endangered and threatened marine species; marine mammals and marine turtles; marshes, mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, other coastal habitats; areas identified by NOAA Fisheries as essential fish habitat (EFH); and areas within EFH identified as Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (HAPC). NOAA trust resources can also include marine habitats and resources associated with National Marine Sanctuaries, National Estuarine Research Reserves, and areas under state coastal management programs, including Areas of Concern within the Great Lakes. The program aims to foster collaboration among diverse entities and groups (e.g., public and nonprofit organizations, citizen and watershed groups, anglers, boaters, industry, corporations and businesses, youth conservation corps, students, landowners, academics, and local, state, and federal government agencies) in order to cooperatively implement safe, impactful, and cost-effective marine debris removal projects. In order to track project success, funded projects will need to be able to report the total amount of debris removed (metric tons), total area or extent cleaned or restored (acres and/or miles), types of debris encountered, and volunteer hours involved.

Job Fair in Prince George's County

On August 29, 2013, I hosted a job fair at the Prince George’s County Sports and Learning Complex. Approximately 2,000 job seekers met with over 90 employers from national and local businesses; federal, state, and local agencies; unions; and non-profit organizations.

Federal Minimum Wage Town Hall

I recently hosted a town hall to discuss the importance and impact of raising the federal minimum wage. It was a packed house as we heard our panelists explain that when you adjust for inflation, today’s minimum wage is worth about $2 less than it was in 1968. Our excellent panel consisted of: David Cooper, Economic Analyst, Economic Policy Institute; Britton Loftin, National Policy Coordinator, Restaurant Opportunities Center; Valarie Long, Vice President, Service Employees International Union; and Christine Owens, Executive Director, National Employment Law Project Action Fund.

I am also a cosponsor of Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative George Miller’s (CA-11) Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013. The bill would increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10, in three steps of 95 cents, setting an adequate base before implementing automatic adjustments to keep pace with the rising cost of living. The legislation also includes a raise in the tipped minimum wage for the first time in 20 years, an issue that I have championed in H.R. 650, the WAGES Act, which I reintroduced in the 113tth Congress.

Discussed Affordable Care Act at West County Chamber of Commerce

As a reminder, open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) through the Maryland Health Connection begins October 1, 2013. As part of my outreach to let residents know about the ACA, I met with members of the West County Chamber of Commerce in Anne Arundel County to discuss how small businesses can explore, compare, and enroll in health insurance plans. There was a good discussion about the issues businesses are dealing with ahead of the launch of the Maryland health exchanges.

Visiting NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

On August 27, I had the opportunity to visit NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), where many of the employees live in the 4th Congressional District. In addition to taking part in the Agency Honor Awards, I enjoyed speaking with GSFC Director Christopher Scolese and Marshal Space Flight Center Director Patrick Scheuermann about the collaboration between the two Centers.

Hyattsville Small Business Walking Tour

I also went on another small business tour, this time visiting businesses in and around Hyattsville, Maryland. It was a great experience meeting several small business owners who are engaged in their communities, and hearing their stories.

Met with Business Leaders Regarding the Purple Line

I attended a roundtable discussion hosted by CASA de Maryland that brought business leaders from the area together to discuss the Purple Line. It was helpful to hear from them about their hopes for what the Purple Line could mean for increased business, but also the concerns they have about the new development.

#40Bills40Days to Help the American People

After House Republicans took their 40th vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, I decided to launch the social media campaign #40Bills40Days to help the American people. The campaign is highlighting the real priorities House Republicans could have passed into law for the American people. Throughout August and until Congress returns to session on Monday, September 9th, I have been tweeting out one legislative item each day that House Republicans could have passed into law instead of another vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. I encourage you to follow along under #40Bills40days. You can find me on Twitter at @Repdonnaedwards.
