Fighting for Maryland

5-Year Delay Announced in Plan to Move 450 Jobs Out of Prince George’s County

Announcement Follows Repeated Efforts by Team Maryland to Prevent Treasury Department Move

Recently, along with other members of the Maryland delegation, I announced that the Treasury Department and General Service Administration (GSA) will delay their plan to move 450 jobs out of Prince George's County until December 31, 2019. The initial plan by Treasury and GSA gave employees until January 2015 to either relocate or separate. Since the announcement in August, the members of the Maryland Congressional delegation have criticized the plan to move jobs out of Prince George’s County and negotiated with the Treasury Department for a delay.

The 450 positions are part of the Federal Management Services (FMS) facility in Hyattsville, Maryland. The Treasury Department had announced intentions to move the positions to Parkersburg, West Virginia next November as part of FMS' consolidation with the Bureau of Public Debt (BPD).

“I applaud the decision by the Federal Management Services (FMS) to keep good-paying jobs in Hyattsville through 2019. This is a significant victory for our FMS workers and Prince George’s County. From the beginning, I fought to keep these jobs in Prince George’s County, and ensured that workers received the proper level of support to protect their well-being. I thank Senators Mikulski and Cardin, and the rest of the Maryland delegation, for their help on this important issue. Prince George’s County boasts a tremendous federal workforce. I will continue to fight on their behalf and bring further economic development to the county.”

The Polar Bear Plunge

For the third straight year, I took the plunge into the frigid waters of the Potomac River to highlight the need for climate change legislation at all levels of government. Hosted by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), this was the 8th annual plunge. I was joined by leading U.S. climate scientist Dr. James Hansen, one of the first scientists to alert the American public to the dangers of global warming, and the Reverend Lennox Yearwood, president of the Hip Hop Caucus, as well as hundreds of fellow participants.

"We're going in the river! We're drawing attention to climate change! The President got the message! We heard him say it in the Inaugural Address... We're going to help him out!"

Take the Money out of Politics

Earlier this month, I joined Congressman John B. Larson, Chairman of the Task Force on Election Reform, and Congressman Ted Deutch in signing a letter urging the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee to hold a hearing on constitutional remedies to address the consequences of Citizens United.

“January 21st marks the third anniversary of Citizens United - a dark day for democracy in our nation. It is imperative that Congress assess constitutional remedies to once-and-for-all close the door to unlimited corporate and individual spending on our elections. The House Judiciary Committee has the responsibility to hold hearings on this issue. The voices of the American people cannot afford to be drowned out by unlimited special interest money in another election cycle."

Reintroducing of the Violence Against Women Act

In the last Congress, the United States Senate passed a bipartisan reauthorization of VAWA, with key provisions strengthening the law, by a vote of 68 to 31. However, House Republicans refused to bring this bipartisan bill to the floor.

“I am proud to stand with 153 of my House Democratic colleagues, including every single woman, to reintroduce the Violence Against Women Act. Before the 112th Congress, domestic violence never was and, moving forward, should never be a partisan issue. A comprehensive VAWA reauthorization must be bipartisan, build on current protections, and adhere to the advice of our service providers on service delivery and how law enforcement can protect victims properly. This bill meets those needs, and has been introduced again with bipartisan support in the Senate. Let’s pass it in the House.”

As co-founder and executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, I helped lead the effort to pass the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act of 1994 signed into law by President Bill Clinton.

“Out of Time: An American Crisis” – An Event at George Washington University

Earlier this week, I took part in an event at George Washington University entitled; “Out of Time: An American Crisis.” The 10-person panel discussed a “What If” scenario and how they would advise President Obama to react, plan, and move forward both short- and long-term.
